RECYCLING FOR LOWESTOFT BUSINESSES
12-7-07

Businesses in Lowestoft will now have the opportunity to recycle their waste – and save money on waste collection – following the introduction of a new service by waste management specialists, Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS).

Businesses in and around the town can now order a green bin for the collection of mixed dry recyclable waste – paper, card, plastic bottles and aluminium and steel cans – which is then taken away and processed by NEWS at their state of the art facility in Costessey. NEWS already operates a recycling collection service in Norwich and Great Yarmouth and the scheme has proved very popular: recyclers include the University of East Anglia, Castle Mall shopping centre and a number of hotels.

NEWS’ recycling service enables companies to improve their green credentials and reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill. But, says NEWS’ sales manager, Caitlin Minett, it makes economic sense as well. “Any waste being sent to landfill attracts landfill tax, which waste producers have to pay. This year, landfill tax rose £3 per tonne to £27 per tonne. The tax is going up again to £35 per tonne in April next year. Recycling does not attract landfill tax, which makes recycling waste an option that all businesses should seriously consider if they are looking to reduce costs.”

Caitlin Minett says that businesses quickly get used to recycling and can get immediate cost benefits. “Most people have two bins at home and are used to recycling, so staff and managers quickly adapt to sorting waste. Significant amounts of the waste produced by businesses, from offices and factories to small shops, can be recycled and we can help with advice on how businesses can best switch to recycling.”
